SUSTAINABILITY 2024 – ARTWALK in LECH

The tree as a symbol for the future of our planet

The ‘Sustainability’ sculpture fits seamlessly into the ARTWALK in Lech and addresses one of the most pressing issues of our time: the ecological footprint. The rough, rusty surface of the metallic tree structure (made of Corten steel) stands in symbolic contrast to the shiny stainless-steel elements that adorn the tree, pointing to the consequences of human intervention in nature. These contrasts create space for many interpretations, ranging from destruction to hope for change.

A work of art that provokes

A reflection on our ecological footprint

The tree itself, a symbol of life and growth, poses the question: How sustainably do we live? The plaque accompanying the artwork provocatively states: ‘WHAT THE F….OOTPRINT! … until they grow from the trees and fall on our heads!’ This idea prompts us to think about our own carbon footprint, climate change and the issue of sustainability.

“WHAT THE F….OOTPRINT!
… until they grow from the trees and fall on our heads.“

What does sustainability really mean?

The future in our hands

The question of the future of our planet and our responsibility cannot be answered in one simple answer – just like the 6.5 metre-high artwork itself, which encourages the viewer to pause and reflect on their role in this complex structure.
